Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

My flatmate this evening saw two men on Green Lanes near the post office place a five pound note tied to a piece of string/fishing wire in the middle of the pavement. They then moved away towards the bus stop and stood there

Not entirely sure what they were up to. Perhaps they were attempting to make a sort of cut-price Dom Joly type sketch as people chase the fiver down the pavement. Or perhaps they were hoping to distract someone for long enough to pickpocket.

I don't know but might be worth keeping your wits about you and not be too distracted by the possibility of free money.

SNT - they were both men, 20s, of south European appearance.

That bus stop should be moved, or at least the shelter removed.
with you kid. I`ve tried but they won`t do it

My girlfriend saw this too. They were just having a laff. THey called out to a bloke as he walked past - hey you dropped some money! He turned and looked to pick it up and they snatched it away and guffawed merrily to themselves.

No need to worry, Elle, it was as you suspect a Dom Jolyesque ruse..

Not sure why they need to move the bus stop tho John?

The ATM behind the bus stop is, despite being one of many on Green Lanes, where all the distraction crime seems to happen. I just feel that if the shelter wasn't there, the view of the ATM would not be blocked and criminals would not feel quite as emboldened by the apparent privacy.
Agree. Best to avoid that ATM until either it or the bus stop is moved.
I agree. As previously discussed here, a man hanging around with a group of other men, tried to take my cashpoint card while I was at that Santander machine - they weren't successful. Since then I have noticed how the bus stop gives people cover to hang around next to the cashpoint. You might think oh there is no way I would be victim to someone trying to distract me at the cashpoint, everyone knows about that ploy, but it all happens so quickly you might be surprised. Although no actual crime took place, I reported it to the police, Santandander and my bank, by the way.
There is an ATM inside Santander. I always use it as I feel much safer.
Always use inside if the bank is open. You would not believe the devices that get fitted to trap your cards or read your PIN when you tap it in
