Hello all,
It's been rumoured for some time (and says on wikipedia) there there were potentially air raid shelters under Green Gate Common (the green space opposite Ducketts Common just off West Green Road).
I'd much appreciate some insight or information if anybody has any, and thought where better to find out more than Harringay Online
Thanks, John

Thanks, Etch. Good find. I think you're right, which suggests that rectangle on the 1947 map may have pre-existed the age of air raid shelters. From what we can make out of the 1937 photo, it looks more like an old style seating shelter.
This edited version seems to support the seating idea. It seesm to show two arch-shaped openings
I'm almost certain that I can remember there being at least one, maybe two air raid shelters being on that piece of land between Green lanes and West Green Road. From memory it/they were mostly sunken with thick concrete roof and part walls visible. If I assume I was between 3 and 10 years of age then we are talking 1952/59 time. But might there have been an anti-aircraft / spotlight stationed there ?
Further on from above comment: I seem to recall that one shelter was nearer to Green Lanes side of the common. And I think there was some sort of pavilion type building in that patch ? But I don't recall the 'LAVS' being there. That triangular section of Ducketts was reasonably well wooded which made for a half decent play area for running around in. And I am absolutely amazed to see all those allotment areas. Long gone come my time. Hugh, how about seeking Richard Woods memories, he lived very nearby ?
