I was given a wooden tub (you know those old brewers tubs cut in half) as a present to create a proper small pond at the bottom of my small 30 foot garden. I filled it with water - fine. I haven't any plants or anything in it yet ... has anyone got some oxygenating plants they could spare? Or lilies? or other water plants? Also the water keeps going smelly, so I put the hose in and flush it through - which I did yesterday - but this morning the water has gone the colour of milk? Why. Help and advice requested.

Somewhere I found a readymade round liner for my barrel but a quick search doesn't find another. You can use a square one (eg from B&Q, or ebay is cheaper) if you fold it carefully. Add some sand to the bottom first in case there are any sharp bits poking through. The liner will stop leaks as well as keeping any nasties in the wood from leaching into the water.
I have a clear sharp memory (and less sharp photo) from a few years ago of watching a damsel fly larva (like a dragonfly) which seemed to have been designed to star in Alien, crawl up a stick and burst from its skin, pump up its wings and turn into a damsel fly and zoom across the garden. Keep with it.
Sam I don't it looks quite newish, from a web company I think, it was bought for me . The water in it was clear for the first few months .... why would it turn now?
Crews Hill station (Enfield) is on the Harringey/Hornsey/Alex Palace line and an easy walk from an abundance of nurseries, it is the last station covered by the Oyster card.
You might want to take train ride there and maybe find what you need including a pint in The Plough pub.
I always go there for my tropical fish tank supplies, the nurseries that is, not the pub.
Thanks Martin I used to go there when my kids were small. I'm unlikely to ask for a pint, but thanks for the suggestion - a very blokey one! More likely to go for a cup of tea or a cappuchino.
But thanks anyway.
Ok what I did yesterday was empty the barrel, then clear out white sludge(?) at the bottom, then refill. Water now clear, so any offers of oxygenating plants gratefully accepted...
I said that I have some if you're interested
