Police in Haringey support Metropolitan Police Commissioner Crackdown on Neighbourhood Crime

Haringey's 19 Safer Neighbourhoods teams have today, Thursday 24 November, been taking part in the Commissioner's drive to tackle the criminals affecting local communities under Operation Hawk.

Officers are responding directly to community intelligence to target drug dealers, perpetrators of anti-social behaviour and other criminals who impact on communities.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe said:

"Operation Hawk is another way to tackle criminals decisively and directly. It’s all about responding to local concerns and acting on them to crack down on crime rapidly and effectively.

"The idea is that we take our intelligence to a magistrate ask for a warrant and ‘put the doors in’ as quickly as possible right across London.

"It’s a renewed emphasis on Safer Neighbourhoods teams making the most of local intelligence and acting on it. To help us do this, we need to encourage communities to talk to us and report concerns, but then we must reward this trust, by delivering swift results and telling people what action we have taken.

"Operation Hawk demonstrates Total Policing at its best, working directly with the people we are here to protect.

"Communities are likely to see more operations of this kind from their Safer Neighbourhoods teams, who, through their ongoing engagement, will continue to address local crime and safety concerns to help make London safer."

In Haringey on Thursday 24 November officers did the following under Operation Hawk:

Raided a pirate radio studio with Ofcom in West Green ward and seized illegal broadcasting equipment.

Visited a scrap metal dealer with Trading Standards in N15 to check they were trading lawfully.

Closed a cannabis factory in a garden shed in N10 were a Special Constable made an arrest for production of cannabis (find out about volunteering opportunities with the police at:

Visited an address in N17 to look into reports of a pitbull there and found the dog was correctly registered. Find out how we are dealing with dangerous dogs here:

Safer Schools officers gave theft prevention advice to young people seen using mobile phones and encouraged registration on

Held 'Drop In' surgeries to listen to the community and promote work being carried out in response to community concerns under Operation Hawk.

Carried out patrols to identify vehicles with valuables left on display and contacted the owners to offer crime prevention advice.

Seized suspected cocaine and drug paraphernalia and made an arrest during a raid in Stroud Green ward.

Carried out a drug warrant in N15, Haringey where a man was arrested and cautioned for production of a cannabis plant.

Seized two large bags of suspected herbal cannabis and arrested two women on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class B drugs during a raid in N17.

Carried out weapon sweeps in Northumberland Park and Bounds Green wards.
