Poet Laureate uses Christmas verse to attack British society.

Sunday Times: Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy uses Christmas verse to attack Britis....

Carol Duffy said this summer that what was written invisibly into her poetry was a yearning for a new type of politics: “Party politics does not work any more. We need the best people in our country to come together and meet the challenges we will face, which will be huge.”

Duffy updates the traditional 12 Days of Christmas to highlight the plight of the families of soldiers fighting in Afghanistan and the people devastated by the floods in Cumbria. She also fires off salvos at MPs over their expenses and at bankers over their profits.

The full version of the poem will appear in the Christmas edition of Radio Times.

The first woman poet laureate since the post was officially established by Charles II in 1668 was appointed by the Queen on the advice of the prime minister in May.
