Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

2130 tonight. It was very blatant. Standard MO.
I'd love to see some nice but very violent people set up a sting to explain to these guys that stealing phones from oblivious commuters is actually quite rude.

I've been hearing a lot about these crimes rrecently. It is rather concerning.

They happen everywhere in London - I've seen it happen on the junction of Grays Inn Road and Theobald's Road before, in front of about 100 witnesses.  I got the reg number of the scooter and gave it to the woman whose phone was taken but don't know if it was any use.  Apparently they take the phones to people who export them out of the UK (where they're effectively unlocked) and the phones can be out of the country within a couple of days.

I had an argument with a very aggressive young guy on a moped screaming down Green Lanes in the middle of the day last year. When I quoted his registration number at him (this was all at about 20mph in the bus lane with parked cars in it) he just kicked out at my bicycle and said "it's stolen innit!".

Ok this is an awful crime but I've seen a whole line of folks stood by the kerb all texting away... easy pickings. I've seen a scooter mount the pavement, and a bike on a different occasion, and take phone out of someone's hand before they even realise what has happened. About 4 years ago it happened to me on Holloway Road. I keep it in my pocket now, don't make it easy for them!
I run commute and it's incredible how many people walk around with their head in their phones. Yesterday a woman actually had her hand over her eyes! Normally I can skirt them but often they veer across the pavement...actually that also happened yesterday, I tried to pass a guy on the right but ran out of space (there was a wall) as he veered across and nearly flattened me - he was about three times my size. I wish people would look where they're going! Every so often I wish one of them would get their phone snatched.
There has been a spate of such scooter mobile phone thieves operating in different parts of London - Bloomsbury around the BM has been particularly bad with occasional violence. Typically robust reaction on Green Lanes may prove a deterrent - a few weeks ago a pair who foolishly jumped a shopkeeper near Diyarbakir restaurant got a real beating.

Thanks for the warning.  I live in a place where this doesn't happen but will be visiting London soon.  My phone will remain firmly in my pocket while I am in the street.

Any time you see 2 on a scooter beware. That's the usual method for either phone snatching or bike jacking. Both are rampant in London.

I've seen snatchers on cycles too - harder to hear them coming...

Seeing this and hearing about it more and more unfortunately. I lived around Highbury and even saw one about 4pm on a Sunday...just because it was already dark, and another at 10pm in Highbury near the tube and both just on bicycles. Both happened with plenty of people and traffic around. Sometimes the difficult thing is that you can see that they're preparing to steal, but haven't done anything yet, so you can't say anything. It's even been happening around Oxford Circus at midday - totally packed streets, both traffic and pedestrians, and they still ride up onto the pavement with two on the scooter and snatch away. So yeah, only popping this up here too so people are reminded to just keep an eye out.

I know it's wrong to snatch a mobile from someone's hand but why do people walk along the street with it in their hand so it's so easy to snatch?
