A message from Richard Littman, the director of the Coronet Theatre:
I own the Coronet Theatre in Elephant and Castle in London and am after your assistance (www.coronettheatre.co.uk). The original venue was built in the 1870’s and rebuilt after a fire several years afterwards. Previously called the Elephant Theatre and Theatre Royal.
It is rumoured that Charlie Chaplin played the Coronet Theatre as a youngster and I am looking to get this confirmed because the venue is at risk of being knocked down by a developer. I am trying to prove to the council and the landlords that the venue has important London History and proving who performed at the venue is crucial to its success.
There is a dedicated website to the history of the Coronet done by a historian and the link is here http://www.arthurlloyd.co.uk/ElephantAndCastleTheatre.htm
Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated and any press clippings. I was on the London BBC radio last week launching our campaign and proof that Charlie Chaplin performed would raise the profile hugely.
I am desperate to try and save the venue for the 100 or staff I employ and for the community, and would be grateful if you could sign the petition below. We are part of the Theatre’s Trust in the UK which is a National Advisory Body and as such they are also supporting securing our future. http://www.theatrestrust.org.uk/
