On Thursday this week, the Department for Communities & Local Government published the latest national statistics in the Citizenship Survey.
The proportion of people who think they can influence decisions at local and national level has shown a small but significant decline over the past eight years - from 44% down to 39%.

On the other hand the sense of belonging to your locality seems to be on the up. 76 per cent of people felt they belonged strongly to their neighbourhood in the latest report, an increase from 2003 (70 per cent).
