Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

While in the past web-enabled innovation in finance meant online banking and web-access to front-end customer services, there is today a growing set of organisations which remove banks and other institutions as intermediaries altogether. This is the world of peer-to-peer finance.

This has been around for a few years now. In the UK Zopa is the largest I believe. Whilst there are margins to be gained by disintermediating the banks you do need to be careful to create a good spread on the portfolio you hold if you do it directly. In addition you need to have a good understanding of the amount of risk you want to take, care needs to be taken when looking at some seemingly high returns. That said, if done properly, there is money to be made (although you also need to look at liquidity and default risk of the company itself).

I was at a conference last year where this was shown as one of the big web 2.0 trends so I think its likely to be here for a while.

I haven't indulged but I'd be interested in the feedback of anyone who has done this.
