Over 500 cars seized in Operation Reclaim
A TOTAL of 558 vehicles have been seized, 76 arrests made and drugs, cash and stolen property recovered during a major new sustained campaign launched by Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe cracking down on uninsured drivers.
The vehicles, the most seized by the MPS in one day, were taken off the capital's roads yesterday, Wednesday 19 October in a coordinated series of operations involving a thousand police officers with the aim of targeting uninsured drivers, improving the safety of London's roads and disrupting criminal activity.
Offences individuals were arrested for included money laundering, being wanted on warrant for domestic harassment, possession of offensive weapons, assault, possession with intent to supply class A drugs, handling stolen goods, immigration offences, as well as traffic offences ranging from driving while disqualified to stealing a car.
It is the first operation the Commissioner has asked for where officers across the Met will spend a dedicated day on a regular basis targeting uninsured drivers and those believed to be connected to crime.
Uninsured drivers are five times more likely to be involved in collisions and less likely to have vehicles in a road-worthy condition. The offence of driving without insurance enables and facilitates many different kinds of criminal activity, therefore yesterday's operations will lead to benefits for all business groups in the MPS.
In 2010 the MPS seized 34,000 vehicles of which 11,000 were destroyed.
