Number plate thefts

As I have mentioned in the past we carefully monitor our  ward's crime reports and react to any apparent spike or trend.

Over the last few days we have had 3 reports of number plates being stolen. There is no other apparent link between the reports which suggests that more than one person is reverting to this offence.

Since the process to get number plates made was tightened up criminals are having to steal number plates in order to commit the offences they plan which might include evading speed cameras, parking cameras, congestion charge, driving off without paying for petrol etc.

These offences usually lead to the distress of police contacting the innocent vehicle owner and the owner having to go through the cost and inconvenience of replacing the plates.

A simple way to prevent this offence is to replace the screws already fitted or add to the two sided tape by fitting one way screws.

We have some of these screws which we can drop off to you for free but you will have to fit them.

If you want some please email us at harringay.snt@met.police.uk with your address and how many vehicles you have (4 screws per vehicle will be supplied) and we will drop them through your letterbox during our patrols. 

Alternatively Halfords in partnership with BP and Waltham Forest Police ran a scheme where Halfords would supply and fit the screws for free at certain centres. I have not phoned to check if they still do so but a phone call from yourselves might pay dividends.
