British users will have to adapt to an American view of privacy - or find another way of connecting with their neighbours.

Simple solution - ditch them and stick with us!

RE privacy on HoL, a member just messaged me with the following:

Hi Hugh - re privacy I would prefer to just be 'Stephen' or Stephen X rather than my full name - how do I do this? Thanks

I can confirm that any line of your 'Profile' in your 'Settings' that has a small padlock by it is not visible to other members but can be seen by admin.

Admin cannot ever see your private messages or your password.

Hello - i've been following this issue for a while, and I would advise NOT joining nextdoor at all; in addition to the security concerns and  despite their claims of being a friendly neighbourhood site, the reality is rather different - here's an interview with the new owner, discussing how to "monetise the assets" of streetlife;                                                         https://www.bloomberg.com/news/videos/2017-02-06/nextdoor-acquires-... 

... i've been recommending HOL to other streetlife users in the area, and suggesting that others around town look out for similar local sites.  There is also a new site with as wide a geographic range as you choose to set, kahuti.com - i've joined and they didn't ask for any personal info at all, but at the moment it has a very small membership, this might jump up over the next few days as streetlife members want to find another home.
