Thanks for the notification, Clive.

Last year I watched Nevres Kemal on ITV's This Morning. I thought her comments were measured and thoughtful; with one of her main concerns being the emotional pressures on social workers.

She was very low-key in her criticisms of Haringey - apart from remarks about "a culture of fear and bullying" and social workers who were "frightened to speak up" - which the interviewers failed to explore. Though, speaking of her meeting with Sharon Shoesmith, Nevres Kemal said: "I found her a listener. She did hear my concerns".

In that interview, Nevres Kemal flagged-up the role and accountability of OFSTED as outside inspectors. She spoke of the need for an "independent panel" where "social workers, health professionals. police and all the multi-agency staff that work to protect children have somewhere to go that's independent."
Alan, I was impressed with what she had to say and I agree with what you said about her comments. Her sole motivation was the welfare of children and she put that ahead of the reputations of her bosses and certainly above her own career. If it was up to me, I'd consider her for the post of Head of Children's Services. Because she really cared and understood what the job was about. I only hope some good comes of all this.
