Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Catching up with emails today, I came across a TV licence renewal reminder. Clicking on the link, it took me to a realistic looking page that wouldn't have made me look twice. However, it asked me to in effect start again and set-up an account pretty much from scratch. At first I was annoyed that I had to go through all that agai and assumed it was government agency inefficiency brought about by the introduction of a new system.

Thankfully, suspicion quickly replaced annoyance and I Googled renew TV Licence, logged in to the appropriate page, to very quickly be reminded that I have a licence till next February. It was only then that the penny dropped all the way to the bottom.

I think of myself as relatively tech-savvy and so fairly iron-clad against scams such as this, but I've always also been conscious of the fact that a moment of carelessness could hoist me with my own petard - and hoist I nearly was.

So, I share this as a reminder and warning to any reader.

Grateful for this, Hugh.  I am not very tech savvy and might easily have been taken in.  The tentacles of online scams are far-reaching and begin to affect almost every aspect of our lives.  One thing I do have is the blessing of an ultra-suspicious mind.
