Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

So sad to see Barclays bank close after so many years

An inconvenience for sure

Have to make the journey to the more unsafe wood green branch now

It’s going to be replaced by Nandos and a new KFC opening on the opposite side of the road - too much junk food

I assume the KFC will take the former space of my favourite local Turkish, Harran, which has closed.

Their lentil soup was superior to any I've so far had on GL - I'll have to broaden my search to find a good replacement.

More rubbish on the streets, more delivery scooters day and night - not a positive move.

Selale does a nice lentil soup. It's the one down near Tesco.

Where did you hear about Nandos coming?

Even my mum likes a plate of Nandos. Bit of a step up from the local offering.

With Nandos and KFC coming it suggests the demographic shift to the west is continuing.

Nandos and KFC suggest a shift to the west? Really?!?!?

Admittedly its not an M&S or Pizza Express but we're starting from a low baseline.

Nandos is more Stroud Green or Stokey than Seven Sisters.

Agree, Nando's is pretty much located in all trendy areas (e.g., Shoreditch, Stoke Newington, Crouch End, Islington,...). I find it rather positive to see them coming here, eventhough I'm not a regular customer.

My impression of Nando’s was not one that would suggest branches located in the higher value locations. Chicken-shops of any sort and high value areas don’t go hand-in-hand in my mind. However, I’ve now had a go at translating my impression-based picture into a fact-based one. And, actually, I have to admit that my impression was not really in line with the reality on the ground. Here’s the list of north London branches from the Nando’s website.

  • Loughton
  • Kingsbury
  • Farringdon
  • Finchley - High Road
  • Southgate
  • Swiss Cottage
  • Euston
  • Stanmore
  • Kilburn
  • West Hampstead
  • Kensal Rise
  • Walthamstow
  • Islington
  • Holloway Road
  • Brent Cross
  • Camden
  • Finsbury Park
  • Kentish Town
  • Wembley - Designer Outlet
  • Bishop's Stortford
  • Wood Green
  • Stoke Newington
  • Stevenage - Roaring Meg
  • Finchley - Great North Leisure
  • Greenford
  • Wembley Park

I see no evidence to suggest any link between the brand and ‘trendy’ areas. However, nor does it bear out my previous impression. The only common denominator I see is the choice of high foot traffic locations (albeit including those to which the feet have been transported by car).

PS No Nando’s in Crouch End. There was a more upmarket sort of affair there on the corner of Weston Park. But it seems like that may not be reopening post-pandemic.

They may not be the trendiest areaa Hugh but they are all trendier than the Harringay of old (with the obvious exception of Wood Green).

Not sure if by 'trendy' you mean hip or fashionable. But, I'd disagree on both counts. For example, are Wembley Park, Greenford, Stevenage and Kilburn either hip or fashionable?

Those examples are perhaps on a par with the old Harringay but others on the list such as Stokey, Islington, Swiss Cottage, and the Finchleys are definitely trendier

Regardless though, a Nandos is a step in the right direction. It means someone in their corporate HQ has sat down and looked at the local demographics and market potential and given us a positive assessment. And you can charge them more to advertise on your website.

Im happy. Even if it means I have to bring my own peri peri sauce for a while as Mr Emporium says...

I can onerly dream of a nandos on west green road

I saw the tescos begger shake his head to a sandwige the other day. Wanted the crosont insted

So there is some hope

Now it seems Nandos are (?temporarily) closing about 50 of their restaurants for lack of Peri-Peri sauce. Supply chain problems, apparently.
