Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Quite a lot of exciting things have been happening at Music on the Ladder HQ over the last few days.  As you may have seen in Hugh's post here, St Paul's, Harringay, which is the venue for all our events, has been shortlisted for the "Best Modern Church" awards, which are being run by the National Churches Trust as part of their diamond jubilee celebrations - we'll find out on 7 November whether St Paul's is one of the three winners.
As a result of all of this excitement, now is a great time to come and see for yourself (if you haven't already) what all the fuss is about and why the building is so special.  To this end, we're building up a nice full calendar of events so you can do just that.
Saturday, 26 October, 7.30 pm: Heaven and Earth - music for solo viola.  Emma Alter will present a selection of works for viola, including pieces by Bach, Telemann, Biber and Britten.  Entrance is free (there will be a retiring collection) and there will be refreshments available afterwards.
Saturday, 23 November: Come and Sing Handel's Messiah!  This is the latest in our series of come and sing events, where a load of singers, many of whom don't know each other, turn up and rehearse in the afternoon and then perform in the evening.  David Went will again be putting us through our paces in the rehearsals and conducting the performance.  Rehearsals will start at 1pm and the performance will be at 7pm.  There will be plenty of breaks for tea, cake and/or something more substantial at our Angel Cafe throughout the day.  Scores will be provided for singers.  Entrance is £10 for singers, £5 for audience (all payments taken on the door).  If you'd like to sing, please drop us a line back to musicontheladder@gmail.comand let us know your voice part.
AUDITIONS!!!  Where there's a Messiah performance, there's an opportunity for soloists!  We're hoping to split the solo movements for each voice part among several singers (so, more than one person per voice part).  Auditions will be held on the afternoon of Sunday, 27 October, from 1pm to 3.30pm. If you'd like to audition, drop us a line tomusicontheladder@gmail.com and let us know which voice part you are and we'll get back to you with a time slot.  The audition pieces are as follows:
Soprano: nos. 14/15/16 (There were shepherds; And the angel said unto them; And suddenly) and no. 18 (Rejoice greatly)
Alto: no. 6 (But who may abide) and no. 19 (Then shall the eyes of the blind)
Tenor: no. 2 (Comfort ye My people) and no. 3 (Ev'ry valley)
Bass: no. 40 (Why do the nations) and no. 47 (Behold, I tell you a mystery)

(If you're practising from anything other than the Novello Prout or Watkins Shaw editions, please let us know so we can make sure we're all singing from the same hymn sheet.  Groan.)

Monday, 16 December, 8 pm: Carols by Candlelight: A Traditional Service of Nine Lessons and Carols.  Father Philip Atherton would like to invite all music lovers to share in this musical celebration of Christmas (rumour has it there may be mince pies involved afterwards!!)

We really hope to see you at one of our events very shortly - don't forget you can keep up to date with all our news on facebook at www.facebook.com/MusicOnTheLadder or on twitter by following us @musicontheladdr (that last "e" really isn't there!).
