Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

For those of you who have not come across Music on the Ladder before, it is a programme of events which brings together professional, semi-pro and amateur local musicians in concerts and other events in Harringay. The focus is on involving local musicians and organising events for the whole community.  At Music on the Ladder HQ, we've been busy putting together some events for our new season.  This time around, we're hoping to put on a few "pop-up" concerts in addition to our main programme – these will likely be at short(ish) notice and mid-week, so keep an eye out for news on those.  We've got two concerts coming up in a couple of weeks' time, with several more events planned up to Christmas.  All our events take place at St. Paul's Church, Wightman Road.  Here's a look at what's on:

Saturday, 28 September, 7.30 p.m. - La Belle Epoque: Debussy, his friends and his foes in the Golden Age of Paris (Piano Recital).  In this recital, pianist Bethany Burrow Atherton will present a selection of pieces by the avant-garde (and stick-in-the-mud) composers of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Paris. The programme will include works by Debussy, Saint-Saëns, Massenet, Ravel and Satie.  Refreshments will be available after the recital. There will be a retiring collection for church funds (suggested donation £5).

Wednesday, 2 October, 8.00 p.m. – Pop-up Concert: Oluf Strangeson's Joust.  'Oluf Strangesøns Dystrit – Oluf Strangeson's Joust' is like a scrapbook full of music and poetry from around 1500. Harper Leah Stuttard and singer Agnethe Christensen present a fascinating programme with songs, instrumental music, dance music and hymns to the Blessed Virgin together with one of Denmark's most unique medieval ballads "Oluf Strangesøns dystrit" about two friends, Oluf and Hasburd, who embark on a dangerous journey with deadly duels in the early morning.  There will be a retiring collection for church funds.

Saturday, 26 October, 7.30 p.m. – Viola Recital.  Viola player, Emma Alter, will be performing a number of works for solo viola and pieces adapted for viola from other instruments.  You can find out more about Emma and her work on her website: http://www.emmaalter.co.uk/.  Refreshments will be available after the recital. There will be a retiring collection for church funds (suggested donation £5).

Monday, 16 December (evening) – Carols by Candlelight: A Traditional Service of Nine Lessons and Carols.  Father Philip would like to invite all music-lovers to join him in this musical celebration of Christmas.  As well as the old favourite congregational carols, there will be contributions by St. Paul's Harringay's own choir and by other singers from the local area and beyond.

Other events coming up...  We are planning a "Come and Sing" event for the end of November, along with a piano quartet for early 2014 – watch this space for more details!
