Motorcycle Thefts

We are working hard to reduce vehicle crime on Harringay ward. Part of this drive is to reduce and ideally prevent the theft of motorbikes.  Whenever we see a trend starting we target it. 

This week we are patrolling all the streets on the ward looking for motorcycles and scooters. When we find one we contact the owner in person if nearby or by sending them this letter.

Research has shown that the majority of stolen motorbikes were stolen in seconds by simply pushing them away, or by lifting them into a van.

The Stolen Vehicle Squad have conducted a lot of work on motorbike thefts and recovered many bikes which were either stolen and given new identities or their parts used to create new bikes completely. Very rarely are motorbikes larger than mopeds stolen in order to be “joy ridden”

The advice they and we give is

• Always secure unattended motorbikes.
• Just fitting a chain or disc lock to the bike will not stop it being lifted into a van. Where possible secure it to an immoveable object or to another bike’s chain.
• Use a good quality chain and lock and try to secure it so that the chain is relatively tight and does not lie on the ground as this makes it easier for a thief to break.
• Consider fitting a ground anchor and using a good lock if you park your bike on your private land

• ·        If possible fit an alarm.
• use a property marking system which makes it more difficult to change the identity of the bike and makes the parts of the bike less easy to use in other bikes

IT IS BETTER TO HAVE IT SECURED TO SOMETHING SOLID NEAR YOUR HOUSE THAN TO NOTHING DIRECTLY OUTSIDE YOUR HOUSE
