Hi all,
I’ve recently been selected as the new Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Tottenham, so firstly a formal hello!
I think most of you know me as a Tottenham resident and local parent and obviously a very passionate supporter of local issues.
Haringey has seen a huge increase in this type of crime across the borough and as I’m sure you will have seen in the many news reports and online forums it’s getting worse.
Our Highgate Councillor Liz Morris has written an open letter asking Sadiq Kahn to take more action to prevent and tackle moped crime.
We have organised a meeting with local police to ask what they are doing currently and what further action can be taken.

This meeting is over in Muswell Hill so may not work for everyone
If you feel we need to organise something over in this side of the borough please do let me know and I can look into arranging something.
Hope to see some of you there next week.

the bikes are stolen. Licensing irrelevant. Speed bumps add to the fun.
Stop the ULEZ madness from including 2 wheeled vehicles, which forces owners to buy new shiney ones that are more of a theft target.
Realistically, it won't put a stop to this crime - unless you could dissuade everyone from using their mobile phones in the street. And even then, they would just move on to nicking other things or perhaps even assault to get anything at all from pedestrians.
Tackle the crime itself by hitting hard at the perpetrators rather than cowering in submission to it. I read somewhere that the police now had a policy to chase them on scooters of their own.
we should not have to do that. What is going to happen next? Hide our watches, leave handbags at home, etc? if everyone hid their phones when walking, then they will move to walking into cafes to steal laptops etc, or even worse, would get more aggressive if you make it more difficult for them. What we need is more police targeting them and making sure it's not worth the risk for them to do such things, with more community sentences etc.
" We should not have to do that "
Agreed, but this is 21st century Haringey.
Adapt or risk losing your phone.
Alex - exactly what I wrote, without reading your post first.

Moped gang attacks prompt review of police pursuit rules
Pursuit ...
A review of the law and practice regarding police pursuits is to be carried out to ensure officers feel they have the legal protection they need to go after moped and scooter gangs, the Home Office has announced.
In 2014 an 18-year-old man, Henry Hicks, was killed after colliding with a vehicle while he was on a moped. He was being pursued by two unmarked police cars in Islington, north London. The police have said that since then there have been strict conditions put on officers pursuing suspects on mopeds.
A forum this month on motorcycle-related crime heard there was a perception among the public and some officers that police would not pursue suspected offenders riding vehicles at high speeds. The forum included representatives of the police, motorcycle industry and government departments.
The Teenage Moped Gangs Terrorising the UK's Streets
Why now?
Simon Harding, a senior Criminology lecturer at Middlesex University London says, "It's been fairly common on the continent for decades, but it's really taken off in a big way in the UK since mopeds and scooters have become more common here," Harding explains. "You have smaller bikes, you have a lot of high-value phones, and you have guys aged from around 15 to 25 interested in building their reputation in urban street gangs. All that has made it the crime of the moment."
Moped-riding robbers who targeted George Osborne are jailed
Focusing resources to catch & jail the criminals
In this case one might assume high profile involvement focused police resources to prioritize this gangs capture ...
In a victim impact statement previously read out to the court, Osborne said he had felt “shocked and stunned” after the attempted snatch of his phone.
However ...
Claude Parkinson, 18, of Islington, north London, and boys aged 15 and 16, who cannot be named because of their ages, chatted and joked as they were sentenced. All three had previously admitted conspiracy to commit robbery.
Hi Peter,
I think its far more relevant to focus on the present day.
We pledged an extra £300million a year to fund additional police resources as part of our manifesto at the last GE.
Locally we have campaigned against the closure of police stations in Haringey and as you can see with my original post we are trying to act on residents concerns about crime and work with the police to address some of those issues.
We will carry on doing those things and working in what I hope is a positive way with the authorities and with our constituents to ensure that we make Haringey a safer place to live.
