Might is Right

When did we stop using " Might " for a possibility in the past ?

Just one example among many - a report in today's paper on an accident to a man who tried to use petrol to light a bonfire says " he believes he may have died.... "

Given that there is a picture of him sitting up in bed after the accident, I think it's fairly clear that he did not die.
