Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Good afternoon all,

As someone who has been trying to get some mental health treatment in the area for two years now, and still be stuck at number 50 on the waiting list, I was wondering if anyone else has had the same problems?

I am submitting an official letter of complaint by post this weekend but am interested to see if it would be worth starting a petition or contacting local media to bring attention to this issue.

I look forward to hearing about your experiences.

Jesse

I think that anything that highlights the problem is worth doing. It might be worth contacting Cllr Pippa Connor (pippa.connor@haringey.gov.uk) who is the shadow health spokesperson on the council. She is extremely knowledgable will be able to advise you further.

Interestingly and sadly it has been announced this week that Haringey Labour will be pulling the funding for the advocacy service for Mindin Haringey (see below)

Closure of Advocacy service
Mind in Haringey has been informed that after 23 years of delivering Mental Health Advocacy services in Haringey, the contract funded by Haringey Council will end on the 31st December 2014.

From Friday 10th October 2014, we will be unable to take on any new client advocacy work. Existing clients will continue to receive a service until the end of their 3 month period, all client work will end on or before the 31st December 2014.

Wow, that's such a shame about Mind in Harringay!

I didn't even know it existed, or I would have turned to them long ago. I'll get in touch with Pippa Connor - thanks very much for your help.

Hi Jesse

I am frankly horrified to hear you've been waiting so long for help. Whilst I have not had any personal experience of mental health services provided by Haringey I lost a close family member a couple of years ago so I do have some understanding of how important it is that such services are provided efficiently and effectively. I am also concerned to hear that support to a tremendous organisation like Mind is being cut! I believe that a petition is worthy of some serious consideration. Feel free to send a connection request if you would like to discuss this further.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your reply! I've had a busy week and haven't gotten anything off the ground but will definitely try and invest some time this weekend.

I just feel really lucky that I'm well enough to get on with life (though ironically this is stopping me from being seen urgently), but I feel really awful for people in the same situation who don't have the same support as I do and can't advocate for themselves.

Haringey seems to be quite a needy place with this type of surgery and it makes me so cross that our postcode stops us getting the support we need.

Thanks for your comment and encouragement.

Hi, I'm surprised to hear that. I did refer to some services and they were offered swiftly (within a few weeks).

I had some contact with Haringay Mind last year but both the support groups I went on have now lost their funding which is just inexcusable in today's health climate.  What kind of support are you loking for? If it's something like CBT I recommend talking to your GP for a referral to a local provider - it might not be the right type at first but sadly it seems to be one of those things that you get in where you can then work at finding the right place/person (I've been lucky that my practice is technically in Hackney so I'm able to access facilities there as well, though I've still gone through a number of places in the last couple of years...)

If they can't offer you anything in person for a while, then it might be worth asking your GP if they support online CBT courses - something like this has been proven to be very useful either on its own or as a precursor to individual/group sessions http://www.beatingtheblues.co.uk/  And I'm assuming you've already seen this, but there is some info on the council's website with links to charities and support groups that might offer some advice http://www.haringey.gov.uk/index/social_care_and_health/mental-heal...

Also, if you want any more info, please feel free to drop me a message :-)

Go to your GP as they can refer you
