Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I've just had an email from HoL member Marika Gauci to thank us. Apparently, one of the local papers found Marika on HoL and has just done a feature on her.

(Now, I'm not going to mention the local paper concerned because they, like other local papers, seem to be happy to regularly use HoL to source stories without any acknowledgement to us. So just this once, I'm going to huff and puff and flounce a bit and not mention them back; nur-ne-nur-ne-nur-nur. Childish, but hey; it's a Sunday night).

BUT, I do want to give Harringay local Marika as much profile as possible. So here's the story in full from ??.

A keen chef is hoping to serve up a slice of success with new pie-making classes held in Muswell Hill.

Marika Gauci will take anyone, from pastry novices to passionate pie-lovers, through the art of constructing a perfect pie in classes which she believes are unique to London.

Starting on Sunday, Marika will cook from scratch steak and Guinness pies and sweet pastry tartlets filled with seasonal berries and fruits, helping her students through each step.

The 39-year-old, who lives in Harringay, swapped a career in the music industry to follow her dream of working with food.

She said: "Three years ago, I just got tired of playing in bands and on the club scene."

"I've always cooked. My mum is a great cook and my dad is Greek so it was always there waiting for me to tap into it. There is such a demand and people always like the idea of a good British pie, so I decided to go for it. No one else is doing this in London."

"Everyone gets dancing to the music and people can come and make friends and socialise – possibly even find a date! I love what I do and love meeting brilliant people. It’s very rewarding."

Marika hopes eventually to source all her ingredients from local producers at farmers’ markets such as the one held in Alexandra Palace Park on Sundays. She believes strongly in the importance of cooking according to the seasons so that everything is at its most fresh and delicious.

The first class is already sold out but there are spaces for September 5 or October 3 classes. Call Marika on 078 6612 2326 or email marika_ gauci@hotmail.com to book or find out more.
