Mapping Betting Shops in Haringey
Give a boy a new toy and he has to play.
So, I discovered a new toy designed for journalists last week and used it to create a map of the 71 betting shops in Haringey. (And here it is again showing the detail slightly differently)
If I can get the licensing department at Haringey to release data all licensing applications they've granted since the recent betting and gaming act, I can add an animation to show the effect on the borough with regards to the number of betting shops.
I've put the data I gathered to populate the map on a Google Doc here. I welcome any corrections.

Yup, much more impactful. I added the second version to give more of a sense of the number of establishments within the concentrations shown by the blot style map.

The latest Application is from Paddy Power who are Appealing against Haringey Council's correct interpretation of Planning law in respect of PP's Application to put a betting shop into Everybodies Music (i.e. a change from A1 to A2 use) in Tottenham.
Anyone wishing to support the council and object to the Application is invited to write to the Planning Inspector in Bristol, who will decide the case on written submissions (the council was earlier obliged to grant the Application for a gambling premises licence.

Hugh, you can simply write and ask for a list of licensed betting shops in Haringey.
In 2007 I began compiling a Flickr photogallery of betting shops in my ward and nearby. But I confess I haven't had time to keep it updated. Vita brevis, odds longa.
I also used the Flickr map to show their locations. Which seems to produce a clearer map than the site you've used. With easily clickable links to photos (and potentially, information) about each shop. Although perhaps I'm making an unfair comparison with work-in-progress?
In any case, you're very welcome to make use of any of my betting shop photos in your map. The same applies to anyone else campaigning against or simply identifying this problem.

Thanks Alan. Useful to know. I think the point of the OpenHeat map is that it's built by populating a map with data drawn from a spreadsheet. This means it's easy - so it's probably no coincidence that whilst your map is clearer in some respects it has 22 shops. The one I produced on OHM has 71. Gets a job done that I wouldn't have the patience or time to do in another way.
Get the spreadsheet and you're a few clicks away from a map. And, as I said, you can just as easily produce animated maps showing data changes over time. Now ya can't do that with Flickr can ya.

Thanks for the explanation, Hugh. You're right, of course. The spreadsheet method is much quicker and more comprehensive.
So maybe the biggest impact would be if the two approaches could be combined. For example, with your map but with clickable links to photos and further information ─ the square meterage of each betting shop for example. (Some are double units).
I take your point about not having the time. But that can be overcome if enough people think the task worthwhile and pool their efforts. (27 people each take 3 photos - job done.)
