hi, I'm not Italian but an Italian friend of mine runs a group exactly like this in Stoke Newington - if you would like to join this PM me with your email and I will pass your details on to her. best, Sally
great. I would like to join. I messaged you. But I still want to start one in N8.
I think there are loads of Italian parents around here. It's a good idea! Count me in (even though my eldest is almost 5...)
In fact I've been thinking there are so many Italians more generally, of all ages (elderly people, parents of young children, and very young people who have recently arrived) but bizarrely no activities going on at all, no restaurants (sadly I Borboni closed),no meeting places, no playgroups (yet?) and no delis/shops catering for us, etc.
From my conversation with older Italians who have been here for decades, I gather the only "community" activity appears to be the Italian church in Clerkenwell (which also runs playgroups, I understand) but nothing else for those who want to stay local or simply don't go to church. But that's for another time.
A group for parents of young children would be a start!
oh oh - I really can't do Tuesdays, I'm afraid! Any other day would do, with a strong preference for Thursdays, followed by Mondays and if nothing else works, Fridays. Does it have to be a church venue - it might put some people off, as they may think it is linked to religious activities in some way... How about one of the children's centres? They have events for e.g. Polish parents, so I don't see why we can't have our own there.
By the way, you could advertise the group on various italian expat sites, including one called mammealondra.com. Do keep us posted here too though.
It will have to be fridays then. I cannot do the other days. Also a lot of part time mums do not work fridays so maybe thats a good thing. Sorry if I was misleading. Its Not at a church, but at Burghley Road under 5's centre. They have a stay and play and they also serve vegetarian lunch to the kids. They have given me permission to have a group there. I was planning on staring in september, but I am around next week if you want to meet there.
I am on mammealondra, but having problems with password and they cannot seem to work it out. Anyway I will post the info there too. I will also make a few flyers to post around the neighbourhood.
Perhaps I will change my original post above.
I think there is an Italian-language saturday school in the area (near West Green), for school-age children, by the way. I know very little about it, but I know it exists and is run by the consulate.
I'm not Italian, but I totally agree it's a real shame there aren't any Italian restaurants, delis, etc on the strip. I've noticed for years how many Italians are around Green Lanes and have always wondered why there isn't an Italian presence on the High Street, especially since I Borboni closed. Now I love the Turkish food and restaurants, but I would really love a decent unpretentious trattoria or two and certainly a good deli like the ones down in Clerkenwell.
Aside from that, I'm also sure there are plenty of people like me who are in love with Italian food, wine and culture (I spent six months touring Italy back in 2003 and I now sell Italian wine and run Italian wine classes) and would really enjoy opportunities to try to improve our Italian, make pasta together (you don't mess with my homemade pasta!) or do other cultural Italian things that would generally bring up the awareness of the Italian community. Maybe we should start a trend for a weekly Friday or Saturday 6pm Passeggiata on Green Lanes!
Ah ah - I love the idea of a passeggiata! Not ideal with all the traffic though....
I guess none of us are entrepreneurial enough to do something about the lack of Italian business presence on the High Street. I certainly don't have the skills, but I think a deli should do reasonably well here, if somebody ever had the courage to try it.
How about an Italian group on HoL, for Italians and people who like Italian things? We could have regular dinners and events?
My weekends in August are pretty busy right now, but perhaps in September. Maybe after we start getting some people at the playgroup, we can start organising meet ups on weekends as well, perhaps 1st saturday of the month or something.
I have a daughter nearly 2.5
watch this space!
Yes that's the other thing, miss mama - pretty much all local Italian mums I know work full time! I won't be able to make all Fridays - it will depend on work (I work on a freelance basis so work comes and goes...). I'll try to make the first one though. And I am more than happy to try to set something up during the weekends...
