As lockdown is eased, TFL are preparing to support a major shift in the way that people travel around London. There is an expectation that many more people will want and need to walk and cycle, rather than get public transport/drive. TFL predict their capacity may be reduced by 85%, so it’s important that as many people who can walk and cycle do, so that those who can’t walk and cycle have space on public transport/or essential car journeys.
TFL predict that even a slight increase in car use will lead to gridlock on our roads - which we must avoid. An increase in traffic would also lead to a lowering of air quality which, during a respiratory disease pandemic, absolutely needs to be avoided also. We need to ensure we have adequate infrastructure to support walking or cycling - such as wide enough pavements to socially distance, protected cycle lanes, low traffic streets and speeding enforcement.
In response to this, TFL announced recently the StreetSpace scheme, where they will be working with London's boroughs to identify places where changes are needed to support social distancing or that would benefit from cycling and walking improvements.
This is an opportunity for residents across Haringey to put forward suggestions for change. Please be sure to write to your local councillor with examples of interventions that would help you to walk or cycle safely.
If you’re interested to join Haringey Living Streets to get more involved in our work across the borough click here to join our newsletter group.
We’ve also got local healthy streets groups who are meeting to discuss ideas to share with the council. This includes Healthy Streets St Ann's - who are meeting virtually on 29th May, 8pm (you can join by signing up here, the meeting details will be emailed to you.)

And surely the primary suggestion to be contacting the Harringay councilors about must be re-instating filtering of Wightman Rd? That would alleviate all the rat running traffic on the Ladder making Harringay a low-traffic neighbourhood so more people can walk and cycle as part of their daily routine - one of the Streetspace plan's primary objectives.
It might not have worked perfectly last time but that was due to requiring compensating changes across a wider area - and exactly those type of changes are right now being done all across London as part of this Streetspace plan. So closing Wightman Rd this time would work - the southern end is closed right now due to the gas works, it seems fine doesn't it, there isn't traffic chaos? Lets have it not open again!
With Haringey's ever growing population
And Public transport unable to cater
More will be driving. Acting idiots seems normal these days
As Committed Motoring Offences does not lead to being locked up on being Charged
Closing Wightman road, does not cure traffic issues. Just Generates more for other Roads / Areas
Was bad over 20 years ago when Working in Haringey Enforcement Team. And these days is totally out of Control
Those days there was not so many Blocks of Flats. With even more people needing parking spaces
But living in a Country where anyone who has passed a driving Tests and can afford a vehicle and Insurance Believe it is their right to drive as they wish
And with a growing number working on different Shifts around the Clock. It would be near impossible to bring in timed Road restrictions. And mission impossible to Enforce
Believe the Road through the Palace is Only closable on certain occasions. And a Major Bus Route. Which would cause many more problems if closed off. Not forgetting that many use the Area correctly and safely
Seems a case that locals need to have a meeting with Police Liaisons Officers and see if they can mount a operation that and sort the issues. Doubt if there is much local Authority can do as issues are moving violations. Takes time to get Traffic Orders and they cost serious money and time
