Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Major Adaptations - anyone had experience of the social services system?

Hello!

I've been waiting for over 2 years now for major works to be carried out to make our property fit for purpose and wheelchair accessible. There has been delay after delay, including failure to even source a contractor under the DFG funding that all residents are entitled to.

We really thought it would be quicker than this, considering the terminal condition that the resident in question is living with.

I wondered if anyone on here has had experience of the Haringey Social Services and Adaptations team, and would be open to having a chat/DM'ing?

Multiple requests for things like an allocated social worker, a day centre and adaptations updates have been met with empty responses, or no follow up.

Thank you!

Think carefully before contacting a council employee; few are able to make Decisions.

You might like to consider the following, In order of escalation:

  1. Meet your Ward Councillor in a scheduled surgery. Take all relevant documents.
  2. If no action, complain to their Party Whip
  3. Undertake two further attempts at action
  4. Contact the Local Government Ombudsman
  5. Contact your MP
  6. Contact the Press

HTH.

I'm very sorry to hear this phb.  But not surprised as I know families in similar situations in other parts of the UK

I've been lodging formal complaints for years and not got very far. The maximum limit for a DFG is meant to be 18months from start to finish of work. Mutiple people have died while waiting for a DFG in haringey and while overdue on the 18months max limit due the council being unable to meet its most basic targets. From what I can see they miss this target often and people die without acceesssible homes. Utterly appauling but little desire to address the fundamental issues in the service from the council.

Thank you Park for sharing. It is truly terrible. I fear so many people die waiting for adaptations and live without dignity for a lot of daily tasks. Thank you for complaining.

We are currently waiting in a process that started in May 2024.

I also did a series of information requests recently which you may find helpful :

  1. the average number of months for residents from point of assessment by social services OT, physiotherapy or other professional to major home adaptions being completed, over the last 2 years (Jan 2024 - Jan 2026)

    on average 15 months

  1. 2) the number of total open cases pending major home adaptions to be completed at whatever stage they are in the adaptions process

1203 open cases as of 3rd March 2026

  1. the number of completed major adaptions in the Borough from Jan 2024 - Jan 2026

390 major adaptation works were completed during the requested period according to our data

Other data from previous years couldn't be given due to 'system migration'.

Quite disappointed to see that no major party/ candidate in Haringey drew attention to the dire state of Social Services and the focus lay elsewhere, when it effects to many. Maybe not the most vocal group/voices. Basics like disability support, health and education totally missed off of key manifesto pledges.

It seems that the leader-focus is on entertainment: London Borough of Culture 2027 and of course, mega-events in Finsbury Park. There's little bread, but circuses they can do.
