Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I just discovered maggots in our trash. It's due to be picked up on Monday, however I'm worried that this is going to happen more often with the two weekly pick up thing and a neighbour who throws everything into the garbage bin.

I've asked him a few times already to recycle etc, however he couldn't care less and even stopped saying hello and goodbye because as he put it: I complain to much.

How can I get rid of the maggots?

I'm desperate and I can even feel them creeping up on me in my bed :(

Yuk, how disgusting. No idea what to suggest except to stop sharing a bin? Is that an option for you? A bit ironic I know given how keen many of us are to cut down on the number, but this might make me reconsider.

Horrible for you, sorry not to have any better ideas.

I don't think hot water will kill then but there's probably a product in a hardware store like Lido.

The council are very good at supplying new bins if you go on the council website - usually takes about a week.

On a positive note, I think the season's nearly over for flies.

I'm so middle class I'm shocked by someone not doing their recycling!

Best of luck with it.

You could try salt. It works with slugs.

I have the same problem. U complained about the small - the bin is outside my window and I have a bad tempered recycle refuser upstairs. I left a note in the hall next to a small food bin plus some recycle bags, requesting she puts food waste in there even if she doesn't recycle other stuff. Thete was no reaction, the box n bags were ignored, but I have noticed food waste bags in the bigger food box outside sometimes. And no repeat of the bad smell. If that doesn't work you could contact environmental health for advice. Lastly maggots aren't bad, they're part of the natural recycling process.

I had the same problem! It was disgusting! They were everywhere all over my rubbish bin and compost bin. My housemate bought something horrible which killed them off which i don't feel too good about but it was a bit out of control! TONNES of maggots!

Hope you get it sorted Jessica! :-)

You also need to wash out your bins with really hot water and soap from time to time.  Especially in the hot weather
