Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Lydia taking the leap--I'm a Tory now!
Hello Harringay,
A few weeks ago a good friend in the Conservatives asked me to run under their banner in the local elections and I didn't laugh right in his face.
My original excursion into politics was in 2001, when I joined the Conservatives because I was so angry about the Victoria Climbie thing but then I left them in 2005 because:
a) I got fed up of politics and
b) I got fed up of the Conservatives (mind you I was just as fed up of the other lot).
When, a few weeks ago, I was invited back to the treadmill, I wasn't any better disposed to the political life but there is so much sh*t going on in this borough that I decided I couldn't ignore it any more. I don't fit that well into a Party mold but seeing as the Conservatives are the only group really serious about opposition in this borough and seeing as I am an Angry Old Woman, I decided that *someone* has to do something. Don't talk to me about the LibDems. The place for nodding dogs is in the back of the car, not in the Council chamber.

btw:
I and my two running-mates, Sean Rivers and Massimo Rossini (NB--Rivers, Rivlin & Rossini make The Three Rs, which all good Conservatives support) will be putting out a leaflet soon.
The local party have agreed to let us write up our own stuff, so we are actually going to be working hard on it, ourselves. At least take a look when it lands on your doormat.

Should I step in now and reveal my educational history and my ethnic background? No, because I don't feel the need to. I find a lot of these discussions ridiculously show offy. I speak about Haringey from the heart. I love it's diversity and I love my community. I don't have any hate in me Lydia, and have nothing against the above groups unless, as jerry did, they try to bully or demean me. I find that quite pathetic.

Not sure that is a sound connection. The average income of the residents of an area correlates to the price of 5 bedroom Victorian mansions in the area. I don't know the area very well so it maybe right but not a good guide. Look at Stockwell, an area I do know well.

Sorry what am I ignorant about? You still haven't revealed where you stand on anything. Exactly which Tory policies do you agree with? Selling off our public utilities to companies who then use their monopoly position to rob us and then don't even pay corporation tax? Privatising the NHS? Handing over our schools to unaccountable private companies? I am familiar with Conservative policy and what this government is doing. Would you like me to explain it to you? Please don't insult me by talking about 'having to do some research'. Nobody would stand as a Tory who didn't already know these things. Or are you taking Justin's position? Put your fingers in your ears and go 'blah blah blah' and hope the grown up politics goes away?

I agree. The same should be done when voting Labour in Haringey in May! The Labour Party nationally are Left wing, the Labour Party in Haringey are well... Authoritarian Right - Wing!

In this context I regard national politics as relevant when it impacts on the area I want to represent and I intend to support or fight whatever edicts are handed down purely on the basis of how good it would be for Harringay (and probably Haringey as well). That is all I want to do.

Give it a break, man. I'm all for debating ideas and so on (for that reason alone, I already miss Tony Benn). You, on the other hand, just want to make cheap points from your shopping trolley, which veers to the far left. Unlike you, I support what works - ideology doesn't cloud my judgement. Can you say that? I doubt it.

You keep avoiding commenting on your governments policies Justin, can't think why, perhaps because they are so unpopular? You, in common with Labour and the Libdems, have seen local authority powers gutted by central government so we have no local control over issues such as bedroom tax, housing, education etc. You seem quite happy with this and put leaflets containing nothing at all. Lydia is also happy to live in la la land, because life is easier there. You both refuse point blank to comment on govt policies but that leaves nothing to debate doesn't it. I note in today's Guardian(the real one) that the issue of you not standing yourself has not been addressed. Perhaps thats an issue of 'national' government which, would of course exclude it from your conversation. Too 'grown up' perhaps. Carry on complaining about uneven paving stones, you, at least, might feel able to get your head round that.

Can we please stick to "local" politics? When we let them campaign on national issues they pull the wool over our eyes locally.

John, you are right. But it is fair that people ask me what I think about, for instance, schools. Schools really are not a 'local' issue, they shouldn't be. The waste of a life resulting from poor education should be of personal concern to us all, from Thurso to Truro. That's on a philosophical level. If you want to bring it down to naked self-interest, the semi-literate outchurnings of a poor school in Edmonton--this is hypothetical of course, I am not insulting Edmonton, I am naming it because it is the next borough up--with no qualifications for reasonably paid work and therefore a distinct possibiity of turning to crime, will not necessarily stay in Edmonton. They will do their muggings anywhere nearby. Good education is absolutely essential for a civilised society.

You then tell us you are an English teacher so education should be something you know about.
I don't correct grammar as I make errors too as do lots of people, but I am quite particular about basic local government knowledge for prospective cllr's so will enlighten you to the fact that Edmonton is not the next borough up. Edmonton in fact is not a borough at all Lydia, it is part of the London Borough of Enfield.
