David Lindo, "The Urban Birder", gave a short talk for the Friends of Alexandra Park tonight at The Grove in the grounds of Ally Pally.

David's not what you'd expect of a typical birder. Growing up in the Seventies and Eighties in gritty Willesden, David went against the grain when he started taking an interest in bird watching. But his passion burned so strong he was happy to buck the trend.

Today, as a regular on TV and a recognised voice of the birding community, David's glad he stuck to his guns. The audience at the oversubscribed event were happy he did too..

David gave a refreshing overview of just how much birdlife and other wildlife there is in our cities. Whether he's in Nairobi, Belgrade, watching birds of prey from the top of Tower 42 in the City or in his home patch of Wormwood Scrubs, David's convinced that watching birdlife is often more rewarding in cities than it is in the countryside, "And you don't have to be anorak to enjoy it", he says.

"The great thing about Urban Birding is that it can be done anywhere and any time, whether you’ve got the day to spare, an hour before work or just a half hour lunch break. In most cities like London, Paris and New York you are never too far away from a green space which can often act as natural havens for great urban birds."

His key message is that we should all take some time out and use our eyes and we'll be amazed at just how much wildlife there is around us.

Great article Hugh. Really weird: I am pretty sure I look at harringayonline everyday but I see from The Friday that I seem to miss quite a lot of stuff. Thanks for the weekly roundup.
