Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

As some of you will recall, there was a lot of local uproar surrounding the loft conversion completed on the corner of Warwick and chesterfield gardens this summer. Many complaints from GRA members were lodged to the council regarding a roof alteration.

Subsequent to these objections, further inquiries have shown the work has been approved as lawful under permitted development rights and cleared as conforming to council building control regulations.

Well I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder- eyesore or not it is here to stay. L shapes have been the norm in loft conversions for years and they certainly do maximise internal space. Cleveland gardens and Kimberley have recent ones too. The (mis)fortune of being a corner property does attract more attention. Hip to gable isn't so much of an issue in the gardens as there is no conservation status and permitted development is encompassing enough to accommodate such projects.

The council planners have pursued not only lax but inconsistent policies- the adjacent property which has an enhanced ridge line and built up side elevation is even more out of character of the local area- yet the council gave the full planning!

It is though an example of how a dialogue from council to their local taxpayers can work- complaints were responded to and resolved whilst the owners still enjoy a lawful development. One can't begrudge a family for the mishaps of their builders contravening plans- all's well that ends well. Estate agents have certainly appreciated the surge in lofts pushing up the local average property price.
