Two questions:
Which is the best local cab firm (or nearby if non of the locals stack up)?
What should I expect to pay, say to Crouch End/Muswell Hill, to the centre of town and to Heathrow? (Is it the same to Stanstead? I guess Gatwick is more expensive.)

Your recourse is a complaint to the Public Carriage Office, which enforces standards of vehicles used as minicabs and possibly also of the drivers, though I'm not sure about that..

I would be more than happy to have that US-style service come over here. I find it quite pleasant to see staff in service-orientated areas have a smile on their faces and not to act like they are doing you a massive favour by helping a customer. I think it's fair enough for people on this site to observe if someone is grumpy in the same way they can point out if someone is helpful or polite. I think most of us want honest opinions about our local businesses. I don't see the point in promoting the bad ones
