Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I am immensely pleased, on behalf of myself and my fellow candidates Karen Alexander and Matt Cuthbert, to place our Manifesto before you.

http://haringeylibdems.org/HLDManifesto2018.pdf

It demonstrates that even given the constraints of the resources of the Council and the limitations on its powers, it is possible to produce a programme for change which is both ambitious and realistic.

On housing, we would stop Labour's foolish and oppressive sell-off of Council assets under the proposed Haringey Development Vehicle. Instead we would set up a 100% council-owned housing company and endow it with an initial investment of£148m.

We would also support community builds such as St Ann’s Redevelopment Trust who plan to build 2,000 genuinely affordable homes via a community land trust.

On health and social care, we would ensure that mental health services in schools are increased and enhanced.

We would also increase specialist provision for patients with dementia via a Dementia Specialist centre in the East of the borough to complement the work done at the Haynes Centre, and fund Admiral Nurses to support all families in Haringey. We would also re-open and expand Osborne Grove Nursing Home.

Because we recognise that many people are struggling financially, we would freeze the present level of core Council Tax. However, we would, where necessary raise the precept for funding social care to provide adequate funding for this vital service.

We would also reintroduce youth and leisure services which have been withdrawn.

And we will scrap such vanity projects as the proposed new council headquarters.

This is only a brief summary, and I have left several topics out, in order to keep this posting brief. But I would encourage you to have a further look at the above link.

Thanks for posting these "tasters", David. I hope it will encourage people to read or at least take a look at the manifestos of all the major Parties likely to take seats in Haringey's local elections. But also to talk to individual candidates in their wards if they get a chance.

I realise it's impractical for candidates to meet several thousand people. But still, I'd like to see a little more calm thoughtful face-to-face discussion. As well as encouraging "human by default".
