You're in luck. We're gradually trying to tag stuff on the site and this is one of the topics we've managed to tag so far. So here are some links to previous conversations on HoL:

Hi Woody

I live near you and I'm also in the same situation - my baby is 6 weeks and I'll be going back to work full time at either 6 or 9 months. I know i need to start looking for a nursery/childminder place now but I would rather send him to a nursery personally recommended by people with very young babies...please let me know if you get any good feedback.

Thanks!
Hi RNM, Will keep you posted once i have visited any others. I am dreading having to put him in a nursery but i am sure all parents go through that. As you live nearby and have a little one let me know if you fancy a cuppa anytime.
Hi Woody

Yes I too dread putting mine in a nursery but I'm sure I'll probably cry many more times than him when the time comes for him to start. Parental guilt - gets you every time.

Cuppa sounds good too - send me a message with your details and I'll say hello!
Hiya, We are at 51 Fairfax Rd. Pop over and we can arrange a time for a cuppa.
I recently looked at a few nurseries in the area for my son:

Adventure Land on Gisburn Rd (just over the railway bridge): was okay, nice staff and reasonable resources, but seemed quite crowded and there was no outdoor space.

Rainbow Nursery on West Green Road: hated it. Was buzzed in with no-one asking who I was and left standing in the foyer. The children were in a messy hall with chairs etc piled up at the end of the room and the babies appeared to be shut in a room by a stairgate with no adult supervising them.

Little Jewels on Cavendish Rd: lovely staff, reasonable resources, small outdoor space, in a church hall which is a bit dark and dingy but the children all seemed happy.

Orange on Willoughby Road: very good resources, nice staff, nice garden. Very large and busy, professional, a bit clinical? Expensive.

I didn't see:

Woodlands Park: good reputation but has a waiting list
Noah's Ark on Mayes Rd: also supposed to be good but had no vacancies
Busy Bunnies on Frobisher Rd: wasn't happy with the OFSTED report

In the end I went with a childminder as I found one I really liked but of the nurseries I saw I would have gone with Little Jewels I think. Hope that helps!
Hi Kate,

Thanks so much for all your great advice, its really helpful to know what other people from the area think. I have looked around Orange Day nursery and was very impressed, but have yet to go round and any others. I will definitely go and look round Little Jewels as I have heard good things from some other people.

Thanks for your thoughts :-)
Can definitely recommed Orange, we have been there almost two years and love it. Also heard lots of good things about Little Jewels!

 - My child went to Little Jewels for two years and I would strongly recommend it - staff are sensible, children are well behaved. it lacks a bit in glamourous suroundings but who cares as long as the children are happy ! (saw all the others mentioned even the ones with waiting lists and was not that impressed).

My daughter is at Eagle Nursery in the United Church at the end of Allison Road and I think it is pretty good. There is a small outdoor space (which they are planning to refurbish as have been awarded a grant), 3 separate rooms; baby and nap room, main room (with areas dedicated to story telling, reading, dress up, colours, nature etc. - you get the idea) and the dining/messy play room. The manager there, Alice, is great and the staff seem to really care about their development and welfare - there was quite a lot of staff turnover until recently but it seems to have settled down. There are a couple areas of improvement needed I think, such as more communication between the parents and staff about the development of the children - but they are always very forthcoming if asked specifically; Alice has advised or put my mind at rest about specific areas of my daughter's development in the past. The food is really good, very healthy indeed, no complaints on that front. The venue isn't a work of art, but being based in a church hall I think there is only so much they can do.

I also saw Orange - and it did look great, but there was no way we could afford the £65 odd a day they charge. Eagle is about £38.
Thanks also from me for all the replies. I will definitely get in touch with the recommended places and check them out. It's really good to hear people's real experiences and not just have to read the OFSTED ratings alone...
I cannot recommend Little Jewels on Cavendish Road highly enough. Our son Freddy started there when he was one (he's now nearly three), and he has thrived there. Don't be put off by the less-then-lovely Church Hall surroundings. What is important is the standard of care the children get, and the staff there are fantastic. There is a nice cross-section of ages/sexes/backgrounds, and you only have to see how well-behaved the children are to know that they are happy. And it is probably one of the cheapest around. Vlora, the Manager, will give you a tour anytime you like, and if you want to contact me direct for more insider info feel free.
