Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I have today sent the attached letter to David Lammy & Lynne Featherstone asking for their support in lobbying the Government to take action to help councils control the spread of betting shops.

I'd encourage you to download the letter and send an edited version of it yourself. (Edited because form letters tend to get from responses.)

This looks quite hopeful.

From Hansard: 16th June 2010

Mr David Lammy (Tottenham) (Lab): May I invite the Prime Minister to take a trip with me next season
from Seven Sisters tube station up to the Spurs ground at White Hart Lane? On that journey he will see a proliferation of betting shops. Will he give local authorities the power to deal with the saturation of betting shops, which are preying on working and poor people?

The Prime Minister: That is another great invitation this afternoon. I say to the right hon. Gentleman that there is a balance to strike. Some of the deregulation that took place was necessary in order not to have over-regulation of these sectors, but yes I think that there is a case for allowing local authorities greater latitude to decide on some of these things. We made that point in opposition, particularly on the issue of lap-dancing clubs, over which local authorities should be given more power and influence. The issue now seems to be being taken up more broadly by Labour Members.
Here's my response from David Lammy's office:

Hugh, David has written to Eric Pickles, forwarding on your concerns (which are of course shared by David and the office).

As an update to what David has done on this issue:

He has asked several Parliamentary Questions on this topic, he has tabled for an adjournment debate on the matter (which would force the Minister into the Chamber to debate the matter with other MPs) but has so far been unsuccessful in the ballot. He has written to Jeremy Hunt, John Penrose and Eric Pickles on more than one occassion, but has yet to receive any reply. David has also asked a PMQ on the matter and is organising to meet with various Church groups, specifically: CARE, Quaker Action on Alcohol and Drugs and representatives from the Church of England. Today, David submitted a Freedom of Information request asking for the minutes of a meeting held between the Association of British Bookmakers and DCMS.

Best,

Pier

Pier Barrett
Pickles is probably too busy stuffing his fat face and appearing on the BBC to do anything useful.
