Kenwood House is to close for a year from early summer 2012 to allow £3 million of vital roof repairs to be carried out.
But the grounds, which are visited by more than a million people a year, will remain open and the summer picnic concerts will be unaffected.
An inspection of the 18th century villa in Hampstead shows it has damage to the lead work and to the timber under the roof.
English Heritage managers have decided this must be tackled to prevent further deterioration which could threaten the important interiors and the renowned collection of paintings by artists such as Rembrandt, Vermeer and Gainsborough.
