Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I noticed a house being done up quite nicely on Lausanne road but i was wondering if the 5 electric boxes et doorbells were normal... Somehow i dont see how they could fit 5 properties in this semi.

Its number 83 on Lausanne road, you can't miss it there is a huge skip outside.

Who should i check this with?

Thanks,

Sophie.

Has this just been converted into 5 properties now? If so, phone Haringey's Planning Enforcement team immediately and report it as an illegal conversion.
I've just checked Haringey's applications system and the only application for this property was to convert it into 3 flats in 2002. Which was refused. This sounds wholly unlawful.
thanks. I will phone them now. I can clearly see the electric boxes outside and the doorbells so if they are five of each, it must be five studios or something.

Will keep everybody posted.
ok. Complaint has been lodged with the Planning enforcement team. I should know more next week.
Great. Please keep us posted.
Just got a phone call from Miles Joyce ( i hope i am spelling his name correctly..) at the Planning enforcement.

Unfortunately the house had been converted in 2003 and nobody objected to it then so they have now legally refurbished the 5 units ( 7 years later) and put very shiny new electric boxes in view of everybody... and apparently there is nothing we can do.

Anybody come across this situation on the ladder? Anything else we can do?
Lots of people have come across exactly this situation, Sophie. On the Ladder and elsewhere. It's time to check the evidence. Start perhaps by asking whether Mr Miles Joyce has actually seen any?

Do the neighbours know if this claim of seven years since conversion is accurate?

Post what you discover. I and several other HoL members may be able to advise you further.
I will talk to the neighbours opposite and next to that house and will keep you posted.

thanks,
sophie.
I'll make some enquires too.

Cllr Karen Alexander
Thanks, Sophie.

And Karen, do please post the councillor's enquiry you send and the replies you get.

We stand the best chance of tackling these problems if everyone shares information, and as far as possible the facts about individual properties are publicly available. The same issues occur right across the borough; so we will all benefit.

And of course, that includes developers and owners who take care to follow the legal rules.

(Tottenham Hale ward councillor)
It was always flats as far as I could remember, although I've only been aware that converting houses to flats around here was a no-no since HoL. At least the people who shifted in across from you are a family, I think we only have about twenty actual houses left on our road.

The one that breaks my heart is on the other side of the street down by the park with the gorgeous big door.
John, even in the 1950s / 1960s the spread of multi-occupant houses had long begun.. Mostly in two storey houses Endymion, Umfreville etc., It's only since the colonisation of London/Haringey'Harringay by the middle-class wannabees from the provinces that it's become a no-no. In my day it was mostly born and bred North Londoners who were even interested in living in Harringay.. none of the sticky-back-plastic presenter RP type back then.. :o)

A friend of mine visited recently and was shocked to hear En-dymion Road pronounced in high RP!

Of course in yer proper Harringay Speak it's Endy-meeon Road.. How things have changed - Berkshire accents in N4
