Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Last few historic Salisbury Promenade windows being sold today only

Thanks to a couple of eagle-eyed Ladderites, I was given one of the windows that they’ve recently been stripping out of The Salisbury Promenade. I was contacted by the very kind donor again yesterday with a tip that the last few windows are being sold today. I went down to pick up one of a matching pair to the one I was given and Chris, who is selling them, told me that if they’re not sold today, they will go in the rubbish.

So, if anybody would like a window for £20, pop down to The Salisbury Promenade, opposite Hewitt Road and above Tesco’s/Selale, and shout up for Chris. If there’s nobody out the front at the point you visit, there is a ladder to climb up on the far right of the building as you look at it from the other side of the road.

A note about the significance of the windows: the building was erected in 1926. The left-hand side has been a billiard or snooker hall since it was built. The right hand side was a music venue from the  day opened up till the start of this century. Names who got their starts include Ronnie Scott during Salon Ball jazz heyday and George Michael.

See section on Harringay Jazz Club in this article, a piece on the Salon Bal here and on George Michael here (a later version I wrote of this article for a book published by the Hornsey historical Society included a quote by Ladder resident Michael Anderson who recalled seeing the pop icon there in one of his very early performances (you can buy the book With a chapter of articles on Harringay by yours truly from the HHS here.)
