Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Last chance to oppose plans for Finsbury Park becoming a major concert venue

Friends of Finsbury Park want your support to complete their on-line petition against the increase from five to 18 days of industrial scale concerts in Finsbury Park.

The intention is to present the petition at the cabinet meeting on Tuesday 17th December where councillors will in effect be deciding the future of the park.

Just a slight correction - it's actually cabinet not full council. Here is a link to the website for anyone interesting in reading the supporting papers for this. The Councillors who make up the cabinet will make the decision. For the record I don't support an increase in the number of concerts particularly in view of the poor way these have been managed in the past.

thanks for the clarification, I have amended the post

So the agenda documents clarify that they will pass the new events policy despite the consultation responses.

The whole thing is worth reading, since the consultation has at least had an impact on keeping the fair visits down. Though large events are still limited to 5, an individual event can run for 3 days rather than 2, and the area of the park used will be variable (ie larger?)

After reading the way the free text comments in an already very limited consultation (almost as one opposed to more commercial events/asking for 'a park') were summarised as 'mixed', I have concluded I cannot vote Labour in this ward again.

I have come to the same conclusion.

Sounds as if this is yet another Done Deal which seems to be the case with the Sainsbury's in Hornsey High Street, the shopkeepers there struggle to make a living - they won''t have that problem if Sainsbury's opens as they will all close down one by one. Large events in Finsbury Park will cause massive traffic problems in the area. Anybody who has ever been to Finsbury Park Tube Station will know how difficult the access to the platforms is, no escalators or lifts only stairs which would be very danger with crowds.  Do any of the Council members ever use Finsbury Park tube- if they have they would be only too aware of the danger with huge crowds there.

On the back of this is an application by Live Nation for an indefinite licence to hold events in Finsbury Park

Previous experience of events in the park have shown that residents are hugely disadvantaged by huge crowds and simply poorly managed events, lack of toilet facilities essential meaning that the park (and in some instances, residents front gardens) becoming a giant public toilet, antisocial behaviour, loss of use of the park for local families not to mention the fact that 50,000 people tramping over it every couple of weeks will destroy it.

Is it a done deal by the council cabinet, we will have to wait and see but I wouldn't hold your breath for them to take much notice of what local residents think.

It's our park and we need to protect it for local families now and for the future. I'll be continuing to work to that end.
I'm not sure why you talk about the sainburys in Hornsey and events in finsbury park in the same post . Surely local shops love having big events in the area as it brings so much trade for them?
I think the events put the area on the map, bring a great deal of pleasure & celebration to people. Plus there's always lots of free space in the park for general use.
However I agree the park should be mainly a quiet and open space on most days but lets not become dull British nimbys about this.

A small victory is that the Cabinet paper now recommends a maximum of five large events a year (each of up to three consecutive days in length). So the maximum is now 15 days. But a large part of the park is likely to be fenced off for up to a week either side of each event for set up/dismantling equipment. Events already booked for weekends of 23/24 May and 4-6 July with more in the pipeline if this new policy is signed off on Tuesday night.

At its December meeting Haringey Cabinet decided to adopt the proposal of allowing up to 5 events of up to 3 days each per year in Finsbury Park.  This equates to 15 days + a week either side of the event weekend = 10+ weeks, not including the school Summer hols.  So…..the probability that from mid-May to mid-September over 40% of the park will be out of bounds to residents.

Those of you who signed the Friends of Finsbury Park's petition, thank you so much.  Just to let you know that thanks to this support, Haringey Cabinet's decision is being 'called in' for review.

A meeting will take place on Monday, 6th January at 6pm in the Haringey Civic Centre where the decision to push the new events policy through will be challenged.  If you would still like to sign the petition to show your opposition to the decision, please go to www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/haringey-council etc as before. Even better, come along to the meeting to register your disapproval.
