Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi,

Haringey Migrant Support Centre is a relatively new, entirely volunteer-led organisation, providing a weekly drop-in service for migrants, offering advice and signposting on immigration, welfare and healthcare issues. It also provides a safe and welcoming space to reduce social isolation amongst migrants and serve as a hub for social and well being activities.

One of our priorities at the moment is finding a laptop or two for the volunteers to be able to efficiently carry out the work at the drop in and for the large amounts of admin work that come out of it. We do have one at the moment but it is not enough.

A current lack of funds means purchasing laptops is just not possible, unfortunately.

If anyone has an old laptop lying around in their house in relatively good working order (it would mainly be used for Microsoft Office and the internet) that they would be happy to give to a really worthwhile cause operating locally then please do get in touch. It would be such a great help! It doesn't have to be state of the art, just usable!

Cheers!

Katie

Hi, I know you said that you cannot afford to buy, but if you don't get any free offers, you could always go to Computer Aid International. They re-commission ICT kit including laptops for use mostly in projects in the developing world, but will also sell to charities or non profit organisations in th UK. I think it is around £50 for a laptop. They also sell MS Ofiice etc (all legal!) for around £10 with each machine if you need it. They are based in New Southgate.

Hi Katie

Have you heard of 'Freegle'? It's a free to register and free to use UK online based, non-profit, voluntary charity recycling/reuse forum. ilovefreegle.org (Freegle means 'Free Giving Locally Easily') Where members can offer and/or request just about anything so long as it's free and legal. The reason I'm getting in touch is to tell you that Freegle actively encourage Charities, Other Non-Profits, Voluntary organisations, Hostels, Safe Houses, Church and other Outreach organisations and many more who can apply via the 'Contact Us' link at ilovefreegle.org to join their local branches and can then post 'Wanted' ads and/or respond to Offers for the resources needed to keep them up and running completely free of charge.

On some groups such as mine here in Enfield members can advertise (For items such as laptops) or for other things such as items for raffles for fundraising efforts, ask for volunteers and advertise fund raising events. Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions and check out our main website where you'll be able to find out all about our fantastic organisation ilovefreegle.org - You'll also find us on Facebook and Twitter -

Members can join as many groups as they wish so long as they're able to reach members homes to pick up items they've requested. Freegle is run entirely online by over 1,000 dedicated unpaid volunteers running over 380 groups with around 1.5 million members - My own group Enfield Freegle saved over 80 tons of perfectly useful items from landfill. That's our only goal 'To Stop Good Stuff Going to Landfill' and in doing that support our local communities.

Kind regards

Liz Douglas
