Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Following a chance comment by Matt on another thread recently, I followed up with Ladbrokes about the possible closure of their premises on the corner of Salisbury Road and Green Lanes. I was told the following:

I cannot confirm it as it will be subject to discussions on the lease but I can confirm it is one of theshops we are looking at for a potential closure.

..which sounds to me like it's slated for closure. Let's hope that we get somsthig interesting in its place.

It looks like Ladbrokes are going to merge with Coral, who have two shops nearby. They probably won't need so many shops in such a small area.

Well, that is good news, if a betting shop is closing! They are still intruding the high street and taking over pubs etc. We had a big campaign @LordshipN22Camp in Lordship Lane when the Lordship Pub was (eventually) taken over by Paddy Power. The rules / licensing laws are, in basic terms, as we learned from our campaign, that the council must 'aim to permit' betting offices. Anyway I am super pleased to hear that potentially there is one less of these in the area. Hurra!

Would be delighted to see one less spot in the rash of betting shops along Green Lanes.  Hope the next occupant of the premises has a less corrosive product--and perhaps also a more sympathetic architectural sense.  Or is that TOO much to ask?

I wouldn't be too optimistic about this. If Ladbroke and Coral merge they will have about 45% of high street betting shops in the U.K. In order to keep "The Competitions and Market Authority" happy they will probably have to shed a few shops to get the deal through. Therefore some other bookmaker will probably take it over. Paddy Power made record profits last year and need lots more Fixed Odds Betting Terminals to keep their shareholders happy.

hob, This is sadly my suspicion too - until the law is changed and communities taken seriously, the betting shops will keep coming. So the message is that more awareness is needed - we all need to get actively involved in some way. Pav, its a shame about the pub that disappeared on the site in 90's. Soon no pubs left at all. Thankfully, the area is on the radar of some positive improvements and a strong community / shopkeepers association, I hear. So let's hope these voices help to make sure there is something that the community wants and needs and, indeed, Lydia R, that the architectural heritage is carefully considered and conserved.

You mean Dogtas?

But the people obviously didn't want the pub enough so it closed: the people seem to want the furniture shop which is doing quite well.

This may well be linked to the increase in tax on FOBTs last year, which was predicted to lead to some closures:

"the policy, which will come into effect on March 1 2015, .. will potentially result in closures."

- no great loss...
