Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Stuart McNamara sent me a link to the TED website and a videoed talk by Kathryn Schulz.

Most enjoyable — and not just because she describes herself as a wrongologist.  Nor because I spend considerable time trying to understand why parts of Haringey Council and many other organisations are so resistant to learning from their (often repeated) mistakes.

What really won me over in Kathryn Schulz's talk was her example from the Road Runner cartoon. It's the bit where Wile E. Coyote runs over the cliff edge — but fails to fall until he realises there's nothing under his feet. And of course, he does the same thing again in other episodes.

I read Ms Schulz's book, which was interesting if over-long, which I find a problem with many (particularly American) non-fiction books. You get the message early on, and the rest of the book is about hammering it home in various ways. Maybe I just have a poor attention span...

I think organisations often suffer from turnover of staff, particularly those in charge, who are not familiar with what has been tried and failed in the past. Often "new brooms' are brought in who feel duty bound to start changing things immediately; if they don't, or bide their time to find out what actually DOES still work and what needs addressing, they are seen as ineffective.
