Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
It's a great day!
I had a smash up on my bike before Xmas, and I've been getting the tube to work for the last three months - yuck. But now my broken arm, and broken front wheel are fixed, the sun is shining and I'm back on my bike.
You'll recognize me as the guy going faster than you with a grin on my face!

Hey, congrats. I know how you feel, so much better on a bike! I've had a bad back for a year or so and am so frustrated, can't wait to get back in the saddle! (and let me know when you want a race up a hill ;-))

life on the bike is fantastic now,makes up for all those lousy wet/windy days when life just felt so miserable out there-now i feel so sorry for all those poor commuters on buses/tubes

Thanks - but sadly my excitement was very short lived: Tuesday morning I got hit by a car. I'm a bit mashed up but thankfully it's just cuts and bruises. Bike is a mess; waiting for a service report back from the shop.
What rotten luck!
Still, no broken bones, so I should be back on the road next week.

As for advice, always wear a helmet. In the two accidents I've had, my helmet saved me from worse injuries.
I was really lucky on Tuesday in that another cyclist, a guy I didn't know, stopped to assist and was an invaluable help. He called an ambulance and the police, he spoke to the car driver and took his details, he also took my phone number and called me back later that day to check I was ok and to offer himself as a witness should I need one. I am very grateful to him for dealing with all this while I was in no fit state to think straight.
I hope I can be of as much help to someone else if I witness an accident.

It was on Seven Sisters Road. I was in the bus/cycle lane and a car cut across me to turn left. It's a constant danger to cyclists, and one I am always watching out for, but this guy overtook me to turn, so I didn't even see him until he was right in front of me. The driver has grudgingly agreed to pay for my repairs.

I find asking them if they'd prefer it if you spoke directly to their insurance company usually makes them less grudging - they're so desparate not to lose their no claims bonus.
Are the police not going to prosecute him? Sounds like a text book case of careless driving.

I don't know what the police said to the driver: they told me that the driver had agreed to pay for all my repairs, and asked if I was happy with that. Given that I wasn't that badly hurt, and the driver had at least stopped and seemed genuinely concerned and sorry, I'm not minded to push for prosecution.

I've given up wearing a helmet. I think people see me more as a person on a bike and take a little more care. It also means I don't feel so comfortable going full throttle down Green Lanes from Manor House (Haringey side of course, Hackney side has no enormous potholes to be afraid of).
