A few days ago we had someone staying with us who was working with a fast laptop. Borrowing it and using Google Translate's Voice recognition worked as a basic interpreter between me and a Romanian (but non English speaking) newly arrived Tottenham resident.
Maybe not quite Douglas Adams' Babel fish ... yet.  But probably on its way?
I wonder if anyone on Hol has some experience/advice based on agencies/companies using a similar or more sophisticated set-up for bridging the language barrier at a basic practical level?

A welcome chuckle, Angela. But should I assume you haven't actually tried it? 
John, For the brief conversation I mentioned, it made all the difference between smiles and mutual incomprehension and what happened. Which was communicating the gist of a problem and being able to reassure someone.
