Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Incident on Umfreville Road, 8.50 pm Wed 1st March

Just for your information, my sister-in-law was walking up our road from Green Lanes, when 3 young people that were sitting on the low walls outside our house (where the roads narow) attacked her, one coming up from behind, pushing her over, and kicking her and attempting to take her bag.
Obviously very shocking and unsettling for her, and she is battered and bruised and scared.
I do often look outside suspiciously at people that hang around on these walls, but this is almost the first time that I have ever known of something happening in 15 years, So I do not want to make people paranoid, but, if you live on the ladder in the same sort of place that I do, be aware. The wider pavement and the low wall makes this a common area to hang around, and the nearness of Harringay Passage makes for an easy escape route for any criminals. And the opportunists that attacked her again may choose a similar spot on one of the other roads on the ladder to smoke, drink and look out for victims
Also, to my shame, I heard her crying out, just outside our house, but thought it was just kids mucking around, So, I suppose, even if it is jt looking through the curtain, please do not ignore cries which may be for help. You might be able to help someone.
Also, my sister-in-law got no idea of their appearance, although I knocked on some doors, and a neighbour's daughter did see them and is giving a description to the police. There were 3 of them she said they looked about 15, and were obviously looking for trouble, and she thought she heard them smashing bottles, which they must have been doing as there is lots of broken glass there.
The police came by car in a matter of minutes. They did not look much older than 15 themselves to me, but they drove my sister-in-law around to see if they could recognise anyone hanging around.

Oh my goodness not another. If you look at this conversation Richard, you'll see that we're working with the politicians and police to get something done about this nasty spate of incidents we're going through.
In the meantime, I hope your sister-in-law is okay. Do let her know that the thoughts of hundreds of her neighbours are with her.

Hope your sister in law is feeling better. This is the second bag snatching on Umfreville reported on this website this week which is rather worrying.
Good on your neighbour's daughter for coming forward and giving a description.

Thanks for letting us know Richard. A friend of ours teenage son was mugged using similar tactics around the passage. Perpetrators sitting on a low wall at road/passage junction just waiting for an opportunity. This was some time ago but the tactics do need to be noted by all.

Richard - I'm so sorry to hear this. Hope your sister-in-law is OK. I reported the attempted mugging of another woman on Umfreville Road on Friday night. To have another similar incident so soon afterwards is shocking.

Gosh, was it the same place? This was just by where the road narrows and the pavement is wider, so kids (and adults ) do hang around here. That is worrying. I did not see them, but this was a group of 3 boys, our neighbour thought about 15 years old.

No it was Frobisher Rd, north end of the ladder but also teenage boys. Happened about 18mths ago.

Friday's attack happened further up Umfreville Road, as the woman approached the canal. She thought the man had probably followed her up the road from Green Lanes.

The local council offer safety alarms. I know it sounds small and not that helpful but they make a shocking sound. I hope that local residents would not mistake the screach that comes out of them for anyone playing and they could give the attackers a nasty shock, which might be that split secong one needs to run away.

I think that these low walls at the end of the passage on Umfreville Road are a really bad idea. If, for road-safety reasons, there need to be barriers at the end and a way of slowing down traffic as it passes, wouldn't it be more sensible to replace the walls and flower beds with railings that can't be sat on, and to re-widen the road and put in a big speed bump instead? This might also stop the problem of people dumping rubbish behind the wall next to the passage entrance. If the pavement is normal width there wouldn't be any where to put it.
Obviously it wouldn't in itself stop muggings or other attacks, but it might help make these area less attractive to hang around/dump old junk in.
Does anyone know the best authority to talk to about this?
