Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi Harringay,

I have about 20 c60 tapes that I want to record into mp3 and i need to borrow a tape player with stereo outs. I'll be doing it in the evening so therefore I estimate that I will need it for about 5 or 6 days. Is there anybody out there with one available?

Thanks

Andy

Yes I have 2 that work; both portable radio/cassette players. I hardly use them so you could borrow for a longer period if you want.

I was thinking that I needed to get all my tapes converted too. I have about 200 still. Can I ask what software you'll be usin?

If you have an Apple you could use GarageBand. If so I can give tips. Audacity is open source & multi platform, I think you can record straight into it?

If the tape was recorded with Dolby it is best to play it back on a machine with dolby; otherwise the high end EQ needs adjusting which can be done in both the above applications.

Thanks Gerry. I do have apple and never even thought about using GarageBand. Cheers

In garageband, select a 'real instrument' track. After recording listen back on speakers, not headphones.

Before exporting make sure all the effects are turned off (in the right hand window, under 'edit). The only effect you might need is the AUGraphicEQ in the drop down list, be careful though, if you add bass it may highlight the turntable rumble if the tape was made from a record. If you reduce the treble (tape hiss) you may loose the high notes on the drum kit.

If you want the very best sound there are lots free of mastering tips here: http://therecordingrevolution.com/

If your apple does not have an audio input you need an audio to USB converter, I can lend you one.

Thanks Gerry that's really helpful.

Good Morning Jerry,

Sorry for the delayed reply (i should check my spam folders more often). Yes indeed a portable tape player would be ideal, so long as it has stereo out sockets. Does the tape player come with a power lead at all? I shall be picking up a copy of Cubase 7 to record my tapes into mp3 format. Hopefully I can get it by the end of next week sometime. When it arrives I'd like to borrow your tape player for at most a week at that point.

Thanks for coming to my rescue, it saves me having to buy one.

Best
