Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A little while back, we quietly introduced a new improved mobile version of HoL. Prompted by a comment I received yesterday, I figure it's about time to check how it's working out for those of you who access HoL via a mobile device.

Here's what the home screen looks like:

If you click the little grid thing in the top right hand corner, you can access other sections or return to the desktop version of HoL

Once you're in desktop view, you can get back to the mobile version via a small link bottom center of the page.

You can get a pretty good idea of what the mobile version is like and how it works here.

Here's what the message in my inbox said today:

A couple of months ago the mobile site seemed to change on my phone (android) If I go to the main page I don't see the full page, just a feed. I think I sort of understand how it is supposed to work but most of the time it doesn't ie I can't scroll further down to see older posts, or if I go into a discussion I usually can't "drill down" to see all the posts in that discussion.

Anyway, I find it so difficult that I am using HOL less and less, because most of my browsing is done by phone these days as I am holding a baby. So I am feeling a little out of touch!

Is there a way I can access the normal web version and not get the mobile site?

I'm on iphone and it's all working well for me. How's it doing for you?

Out of interest, here are some stats on mobile usage on HoL:

%ge of total visits to HoL made via mobile

25th June to 25th July 2012 29%
25th June to 25th July 2011 13%
25th June to 25th July 2010 5%

Devices used by device as a %ge of all mobile visits (from 25th June to 25th July 2012)

Apple iPhone 46.16%
Apple iPad 26.95%
SonyEricsson LT15i Xperia Arc 5.70%
(not set) 4.69%
Samsung GT-I9100 Galaxy S II 2.36%
Samsung GT-N7000 Galaxy Note 1.17%
HTC Desire 1.06%
Apple iPod Touch 1.02%
Google Nexus S Samsung Nexus S 0.89%
HTC Wildfire 0.83%

I couldn't quickly find comparable stats fro Facebook, but here's what Amazon says:

10% visits are mobile from mobile devices (although for premium brands targeting a more affluent demographic, there is evidence that this figure can approach 15%. 81% of all mobile visits are from Apple device.

Thanks Jesssica. I think I saw a stat somehwere not so long ago referring to all mobile version websites. It  said that the majority, (or was it a significant minority?), of people prefer to use the desktop view on their mobiles because the mobile versions leave out too much functionality.

I'm pretty much in that camp for most mobile versions, but I'm gonna have to get me a looksee at HoL on Android to see exactly what is and isn't there.

Hello Hugh, I look at HO quite often on my Blackberry and it works very well. A welcome new improvement, thank you!

Phew! Thanks for that. So looks like it may be just Android that's having some issues.

Looks lovely on my iphone...

Looks lovely on my Android...

Thanks Alistair. I wonder if it's anything to do with what version of the Android or BB operating system is being used?

Very likely - not quite sure what the issues are. For reference, that screenshot was from an HTC Desire S (Android 2.3.5).

Cheers. Jess/anyone else with an issue on this, what version of Android are you on?

It's good on my iPhone. Before the changes it was impossible to look at comments on pictures and you couldn't go back all that far through older posts.

But I took a while to realise that those little blue numbers actually linked to further replies, so I kept thinking the threads were very short...

Thanks Sarah.

Oops. Just "liked" Hugh's profile whilst trying to write to his wall having lost reply button on this thread. Whilst on my phone!!!!
So - on my android - experia -the grid icon at the top is missing. The functionality is still there, I just didn't know about it! I changed to desktop view but when I went to a discussion it changed back to mobile format. So.... it's really not working for me! But I'll play around a bit more and let you have any more feedback.
Thanks for looking into this Hugh. Seems it"s working for most!
