Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Did you cough more? Throat feel scratchy? Eyes sore? Yes!? Read on...

It seems the people of Harringay* Ladder were in the middle of a right pea souper last week with toxic air that exceeded safe levels** for 6 out of 7 days.

And what are our council doing? Can we hear from them? ...deafening silence.....

* Note - pollution monitor in N4

** As outlined by WHO standards

Boycott the grill restaurants. I certainly do.

Closing roads won't make any material difference to that

Filtering roads might. Reduced car-use and car-ownership would.

Car-owners frequently have difficulty seeing beyond the end of their bonnets. They often have a big investment tied up in their heavily depreciating "asset". That investment in ownership is literal and emotional.

The folly of having a transport system so dependent on burning fossil-fuel is again on display. The current oil price of $100+ /barrel will eventually fall back. Until the next oil shock. The love of crude is the root of much trouble.

Trump's war on Iran may have been partly motivated by the chance of getting hands on Iranian light crude, which is more attractive to oil companies for refining, as compared with Venezuela's heavy crude which he is now getting his hands on.

The Government and the local council have done little to wean the public off high oil-dependency.

I would not say, the council lied. Their over-funded PR department engages in distortion rather than in bare-faced lies.

Typically, you miss the point, Clive. Being one of the loudest voices in the misinformation campaign, that is of no surprise.

As Michael points out above, the ladder residents are paying a price for the beggar-thy-neighbour policies campaigners like you have pushed for. Blathering about Trump and oil distracts no one from this.

But this thread is about the pollution caused by the restaurants, so maybe the men in lycra could, just this once, give it a rest.

Yes! I'm in Tottenham but I work in Manor House.

I had a friend round after work on Wednesday to teach him how to update a website. By the end of two hours with him at the end of my working day, my throat was very sore.

So it really doesn't surprise me that from that table, Wednesday was the worst day. I escaped to Barcelona for the weekend so at least I didn't get it on Sunday - I was filling my lungs with fresh mountain air!

I would point out though that it was not necessarily local pollution last week - the Saharan smog was very bad.

Something to do with the War?

No, just the wind

Thank you, Alice. Excellent work. Thanks also to Rae. I've added/updated tags to make the collection conversations easier to follow.

Has any monitoring work been able to perceive differences in air pollution across the Ladder and Harringay roads to the est of Green Lanes. Are there clear differences between the roads to the east and the west of Green lanes? Also, are there any differences between the roads to the north and south of the ladder? Finally have any differences being found between air at the Green Lanes ends of Ladder roads versus those at the Wightman end of Ladder roads and halfway up?
