Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This weekend people in Haringey can find out about their housing rights at a free information event at Wood Green Library.

Organised by the Haringey Housing Action Group (Part of the Haringey Solidarity Group),  this weekend's event will host Information stalls, 'Know-your-rights sessions' and discussions about what can be done when people are facing issues with their housing and housing rights. Subjects will include tenants rights, changes to housing benefit and legal advice.

Organiser Matt Salusbury said: “The housing rights of tens of thousands of Haringey residents are being undermined by unacceptable Government-driven changes - benefit cuts, the bedroom tax, soaring private rents, lack of Council housing and so on.

“We call on everyone to demand decent, secure, affordable, local homes for all."

And also undermined by the likelihood of - in future - so-called "social" tenants being offered "flexible" fixed-term tenancies. Under the Localism Act 2011, these would usually be for five years, though without any maximum. When the fixed-term ends the landlord could seek possession. This would apply to Council tenants or tenants of a "social landlord" (what used to be called Housing Associations).

If this change is agreed, all new Council tenants offered fixed term tenancies would in effect be in temporary accommodation; liable to moved on at the end of say, five years.

It is a mystery to me how this would help achieve the aims of social cohesion and more stable communities. On the contrary it would add to the existing "churn". One consequence could be, for example, that many children would be more likely to have to change schools.

Needless to say, the current " Labour" council leadership is keen to see this introduced.
