I was wondering how many people have resolved to become vegetarians as the horsemeat scandal unfolds. And today it's donkey.

I don't think this current scandal is remotely surprising, given the distance animals (both alive and once slaughtered) travel to be served up to us. There are enough people out there trying to make a quick buck and enough people who can't afford to be choosy about what they buy for this sort of thing to be only the tip of the iceberg.
Meat eaters (which I am) have a responsibility, if they can afford it, to buy meat that is properly reared and as far as possible of known provenance. The Marsh farm meat stall at the farmers' market is fantastic - many of the cuts really don't cost more than in the supermarket and they taste infinitely superior, also there are many cheap cuts that cook up beautifully and which you can't get anywhere else. I am on a tight budget, but I would rather eat quality meat fewer times a week.
As for vegetarians who eat dairy produce - milk and its products are completely bound up with beef/veal production, unless and until we can genetically manipulate cows to give birth only to female offspring. The male calves either go for meat, or they have to be killed at birth. So it's your choice what you eat, but don't take the moral high ground.
