Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

See story in The Indy.

But note, 'Parts of the building and surrounding land will be developed into housing to help cover the cost of the redevelopment. ' I seem to recall not everyone was happy with this idea?
Are seven-story gated blocks of luxury flats arriving?

Are car parks more important or housing ... it's the latter obviously. Do we want Hornsey Town Hall refurbished? Yes we do. Is there a lot of money around? No there isn't. So let's get on with the project. Build the apartments and refurb the town hall. It's about time! And if it wasn't done this way (a compromise) the council may have sold the whole site off for housing re-development.
See here & here for other Hornsey Town Hall posts.
Yes, but this thread has no automatic council bashers on it. If one feels the need to discuss this project lets keep it focused on the ideas being proposed. :)
Pam, can I question the phrase "gated blocks"?

I'm not denying the issue. On the contrary, I've recommended Anna Minton's thought-provoking book, Ground Control. Some of the issues are raised in this article by Phil Spencer.

But both tend to focus on the luxury and exclusive nature of "gated communities" - often with private security firms and the privatisation of public space,

But what about the far more ordinary and frequent case of blocks of flats with communal spaces? Aren't these residents entitled to have some degree of security, safety, and peace of mind in their own homes?

As a ward councillor, over twelve years I've helped get residents padlocked alley gates; and stronger communal doors with better locks. It wasn't to provide exclusive luxury flats for celebrities and millionaires.

But because ordinary people were sick of having drug users and dealers on their landings; of lifts not working because a pirate radio was using the power; of thieves easily getting into the building and then smashing the locks on their (internal) front doors. And simply residents fearful from not knowing who might be on the stairwell when they came home from work, or their kids arrived from school.
